WILLIAMS TAKES URSS THRILLER AT I-76 SPEEDWAY

BY: GEOFF BRIGGS

The packed grandstands at I-76 Speedway were treated to a thrilling URSS Sprint Car show Saturday night at I-76 Speedway as another great night went in the books.

Blake Bogenhagen was on the pole for the IRSS 305 Sprint Car 25-Lap feature and had his hands full with top drivers breathing down his neck. Barry Crane took the point and charged into a huge lead while Bogenhagen, Ty Williams, Nick Haygood, Smokey Fairbank and other fought for second. Bogenhagen got tapped and sent a round for one of the cautions which sent him to the rear. On the last restart, Williams got a run and Crane got into the turn a little to high as Williams took the lead coming to the white flag. Haygood stole second coming for the checkered. A very happy Williams picked up win number 10 on the traveling URSS Series this year. Haygood was second over Crane, Raymond Seeman and Brian Herbert.

The Modifieds roared out for their 20-lap feature and DJ Banks shot to the early lead, but he had Brett Smith, Dominic Ursetta and Eddie Belec to deal with. Smith took over the point as Banks fought with Ursetta and Belec in a great race for second. Banks spun for a caution putting him to the rear and that left Smith and Belec to battle it out. Belec got underneath Smith and raced to the finish line, for a photo finish. The two flagmen saw Belec nose ahead at the flag stand to give Belec the win. Smith was second over Ursetta, Joe Mullins and John Hansen who was driving his wife Brandy’s car.

In the Sport Mod feature, Caleb Lacy took the point early on with Bob Goetschel following as Danny Concelman worked his way up. Goetschel broke early on and needed a tow and did not finish. Concelman caught Lacy and hammered down to another win. Rick Cuckow was second over Lacy, Corey Cox, and Mike Zeigler.

The Street Stocks and Econos ran together for their main event. On the Street Stock side, Ted Nauta defeated Michael Craig and Phyllis Colaizzi. On the Econo Stock side, Ken Robbins chalked up another feature as he moved closer to the championship. Loren Walker was second ahead of Todd Brotemarkle, Kyle Carrasco and Mark Lawson.

Rowdy Briggs started on the pole of the Hornet feature, but Sean McFarland went three-wide on the start to grab the early lead. A red flag was thrown when Matt Romero hit the turn 4 wall hard. John Symmes took the win in the race with the legendary Dean Smith in second over McFarland, Larry Smith and Jacob Hazlett.

In the 250’s Brian Wilke got by Justin Duncan late in the race to steal the win. Robert DeRouchey was second over Duncan, Warren Rhoades Sr and Alex Chavez.

The I-76 Speedways fans were treated to another great night of racing. During the “Fan Appreciation” all kids left with more candy then they could handle to top off another remarkable night at the Speedway.

The IMCA Modifieds had a 25 car field, that was trimmed to 22 before the green flag of the main event. Jeff Walters jumped out to the early lead, but as the laps went on, Dominic Ursetta caught Walters and was able to get by him. Ursetta took the lead and went on to take the win over Walters, Will Brack, Matt Brack and Brett Smith.

After a long week, Bob Goetschel took the lead in the Sport Mod race that he was determined to win. Danny Concelman challenged Goetschel and the two swapped the lead several times in a great battle. Concelman ended up going on a tour of the infield with a couple laps remaining allowing Goetschel to drive away. The determined Goetschel took the win ahead of Concelman, Jason Anderson, Brandon Williams and Becky Dechant.

The new Limited Late Model division saw a few new faces for the nights racing action and Gary Dechant took control of the race and held off Scott Lewis for the win. Jeff Meeker was third over Bill Smith and Larry Jackson.

Jesse Taylor outran the Econo Stocks and his competitors to take the Street Stock portion of the racing action. Ted Nauta was second over Phyllis Colaizzi.

Loren Walker came out to play in the Econos and went home with a trophy as he took the win over Todd Brotemarkle, Steve Irsik, Ken Robbins and Kyle Carrasco.

The Hornets had a brand new winner as youngster Sean McFarland took the win with Angelo Romero, Bill McDougall, Brandon Glenn and Bronson Brannon following.he Dwarf Cars had a great race as challengers Andy Rogers and Alex Amen were involved in an incident making them come from the rear. Mark Ramey and Fred Schneider challenged for the lead, with Ramey pulling off and Scheneider taking the win. Alex Amen was second over Charlie Drager, Jerry Hunter and Frank Beck.

Nic Sutton took the 1200 Outlaws feature event over Nick Nichols, Blaine Schubarth, Doug Parker and Frank Martinez Jr.

GOETSCHEL TAKES THE SPORT MOD 30

BY GEOFF BRIGGS

Even a few sprinkles couldn’t stop the racing action at I-76 Speedway Saturday night as six classes gave fans a lot of racing action.

The Sport Mod 30-Lap Draw race, had Bob Goetschel and Ed Lundquist draw the front row for the big race. Goetschel grabbed the early lead while Danny Concelman worked his way through traffic. Concelman caught Goetschel and tried everything to get by to extend his winning streak. Goetschel snapped Concelman’s win streak and took the close win. Concelman had to settle for second over Lars Johnson, Jason Anderson and Pete Loepfer.

The IMCA Modifieds ran a 25-lap feature.  James Krehmeyer jumped out to the early lead. John Hansen and Dominic Ursetta chased down Krehmeyer and point-leader Eddie Belec broke. Hansen caught Krehmeyer took the lead and led the rest of the way to claim the feature. Ursetta was second over Cliff Lawson, Brandy Hansen and Krehmeyer.

The Street Stock race had Zach Smith take the win over Phyllis Colaizzi and Ted Nauta.

The Econo Stocks were thrown a curve-ball when their main event was completely inverted off the Heat Race finishes and given a 20-lap main event. Ken Robbins took off while Todd Brotemarkle got boxed in. Brotemarkle made it out and ran down Robbins. Brotemarkle tried everything, even trying to gain speed by hitting the front-stretch wall, but settled for second behind Robbins. Mark Lawson, Steve Irsik and Kyle Carrasco rounded out the top 5.

The Hornets were inverted as well and Angelo Romero drove past the entire field and took the win. Bill McDougal was second over Sean McFarland, Bronson Brannon and Jacob Hazlett.

Justin Dustin took the 250 Micro Sprint race over Robert DeRouchey, Alex Chavez, Zach Taylor and Blaze Bennett.

SPECIAL NEWS ITEM:  FOR 2010 ALL CAR CLASSES WILL BE

REQUIRED TO HAVE RACE RADIO RECEIVER AND HEADSETS

For the 2010 Summer Racing Season I-76 Speedway will be require all drivers in all classes to have a radio receiver and headset. The drivers must have the receiver and headset for the opening race of the season.

You will not be able to compete in any race event at I-76 without one.  Radio receivers with headsets can be obtained from I-76 now for $100.  After Jan 1, 2010 they will cost $115.

Receivers will NO LONGER be available for rental from I-76.

Receiver requirement does NOT apply to Hornet and Enduro drivers.

The radio receivers were implemented in the 2009 season with great success. They help inform drivers of the restart line-ups, warn of yellow cautions or red flags, as well provide any other immediate driver information.

Instructions are with the receiver and headsets.

If you have further questions, please contact I-76 Speedway or talk to an official. Thank you for your cooperation!
