HERBIE NIPS HAYGOOD AND WILLIAMS TO WIN AT I-76

By: Geoff Briggs

Even a rain delay didn’t keep the URSS 305 Sprint Car series from providing the thunder Saturday night at I-76 as mother nature provided a little moisture and a nice lightning show.

Twenty URSS Sprints checked in, but the night was over quick for Jordan Randels as he flipped of the side of the track in his heat race. The URSS Sprints gave the fans that stuck through the weather their moneys worth on the last few laps. Brian Herbert, Nick Haygood, and Ty Williams were dicing for the lead with Blake Bogenhagen having the best view of the race in fourth. Coming for the white flag, the top 3 cars were side-by-side and a blanket could have been thrown over them. Haygood made a last turn attempt but couldn’t get around Herbert. Haygood settled for second in the caution-free race, over Williams, Bogenhagen, and rookie Blake Smith Jr.

Cliff Lawson has had terrible luck in 2010, but that changed Saturday night as he had the track figured out. Lawson took the lead during the first laps and held on for the big win. Eddie Belec settled for second ahead of Brad Shelton, John Hansen and Dave Lindsay.

Bob Goetschel started on the pole of the Sport Mod main event and never looked back. Danny Concelman had to pit twice for a flat tire, and ended up in second after contact with Darren Green on the last lap. Brandon Williams was third over Jason Anderson and Green.

Bubba Willox took is undefeated with his new Street Stock as he won over last years championship car being driven by John Owen, Ted Nauta and Mike Kennedy.

Todd Brotemarkle took the Econo Stock race that had a red flag when Brian Polansky had shoulder pain after being hit in the door by a spun car. Steve Irsik was second over Mark Lawson, Ken Robbins and Mark Slack.

The Hornet feature got off to a rocky start when John Symmes, Angelo Romero, and Bronson Brannon tangled in turn 1. All of the cars restarted in the rear, but Symmes and Romero gave everyone a Hornet driving lesson as they diced through the field. Symmes took the win over Romero, Bill McDougall, Sean McFarland and Track Scorekeeper/Article Guru Geoff Briggs.

Sammy Gallo took the lead late in the 600’s and held on for the win over Jay Sant, Troy Simpson, Jeff Gieg and Chris Crowder.

The I-76 Speedway will light up the sky next Saturday night with fireworks after the racing action. The IMCA Modifieds will run along with the Sport Modifieds, Street Stocks, Econos, Dwarfs and Hornets. For more information call 970-867-2101.
